10 Expert Tips to Declutter Your Home

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the clutter in your home? Don't worry, you're not alone. Many of us struggle to keep our living spaces organized and free of excess stuff. As a professional organizer, I've helped countless clients transform their homes into clutter-free spaces. Here are my top 10 tips for decluttering your home:

1. Start Small

Trying to declutter your entire home at once can be daunting and overwhelming. Instead, start with a single room or even a closet or drawer. Tackle one area at a time, and you'll be amazed at how quickly the clutter starts to disappear.

2. Use the Four-Box Method

When decluttering a space, set up four boxes or bins labeled "Keep," "Donate," "Trash," and "Relocate." Go through each item and decide which box it belongs in. This method helps you quickly sort and purge.

3. Declutter by Category, Not by Room

Instead of decluttering room by room, focus on categories of items, such as clothes, books, or kitchen gadgets. This approach helps you see just how much you have of each type of item and makes it easier to let go of duplicates or unused items.

4. Embrace Minimalism

Adopting a minimalist mindset can be incredibly freeing. Ask yourself if each item you own brings you joy or serves a purpose. If not, it's time to let it go.

5. Create a Donation Station

Designate a spot in your home as a "donation station" where you can place items you no longer need but are still in good condition. When the station is full, take the items to a local charity or thrift store.

6. Invest in Storage Solutions AFTER You Declutter

Once you've decluttered, invest in smart storage solutions to keep your home organized. Baskets, bins, and shelving units can help you maximize your space and keep everything in its place.

7. Digitize Your Memories

Instead of holding onto every physical photo, ticket stub, or memorabilia item, consider digitizing your memories. Scan or take photos of sentimental items and store them on a hard drive or in the cloud. We find the best solution is making a coffee table photo book so you can actually enjoy these memories!

8. Try a spending Freeze

When we bring less into our homes we have less to manage, return and donate. The key to this journey is to be mindful of what is in our home and how we are spending our time and money.

9. Maintain the Decluttered Space

Decluttering is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Develop habits to maintain your decluttered spaces, such as regularly purging items you no longer need and finding a home for everything you keep.

10. Celebrate Your Progress

Decluttering can be challenging, so celebrate your victories along the way. Treat yourself to something special after completing a major decluttering project, and enjoy the sense of calm and order in your newly decluttered home.

Remember, decluttering is a journey, not a destination. By following these tips and staying committed to the process, you can create a clutter-free home that brings you joy and peace of mind. If you need help getting started, we’d love to help!
